NH Tackles Hunger

We are writing with the hope that your school and the New Hampshire HS football community will embrace a project for the NH Food Bank called “Spirit of Giving: NH Tackles Hunger.

WMUR has partnered with the NH Food Bank and the NHIAA for this worthwhile project.  We would like to use your away football game on Nov. 1st as a one-time collection sight for food and donations.  A food pantry that serves your community will be in touch to work out the details with you.  In addition, we need your help to promote this food drive within your school (band, student council, etc.) and with your football booster club.  The home school will also have a collection sight.

To get the ball rolling, one NH business will donate $1 for every ticket sold at each of the Manchester games during the weekend campaign! If you have other ideas that will help make a positive impact let us know we’re open to hearing them.

The NH Food Bank continues to experience increased demand, while some of our retail partners begin to downsize.  The closings of Stop & Shop and several Shaw's stores have already had a significant impact on the efforts of the Food Bank; just food recovery from these select stores was over 500,000 pounds last year.  Most recently, we have learned that all Shaw's stores will discontinue their Fresh Rescue (meat recovery) programs, resulting in a devastating loss of an additional 500,000 pounds of quality protein.  In total; based on calendar year 2012, the loss of donated food to the NH Food Bank and our partner agencies means a loss of nearly one million meals. This loss coupled with the continued cuts to federal nutrition programs will be devastating to the neediest men, women and children of New Hampshire as the emergency food system is already strained.

The donations that are collected at the game will stay in your community and the community of the visiting team. There are 28 games and 56 teams in action on the weekend of Nov 1st  and 2nd.  Just imagine the number of families that will be helped.

Thank you for any level of participation that you can offer. Attached please find a flier that can be displayed in your school.
